BRICS Vaccine R&D Centre Holds Online Meeting

A videoconference meeting on the functioning of the BRICS Vaccine R&D Centre was held on 17 September 2024 as part of Russia’s BRICS chairship.

The meeting was organized by the Smorodintsev Research Institute of Influenza of the Russian Ministry of Health, the national coordinator of the BRICS Vaccine R&D Centre from the Russian Federation. It was attended by representatives of the national coordinators from BRICS countries. The event was managed by the Roscongress Foundation.

The meeting participants discussed mutual cooperation in the development of vaccines, including the use of platform approaches, such as vector and mRNA vaccines. Each country presented its achievements in vaccine development, as well as national priorities in the near future for the development and production of immunobiological drugs. Special attention was paid to the importance of ensuring equal access to vaccines for the prevention of infectious diseases for all countries on a global scale and the need for international cooperation to successfully respond to new challenges, including a coordinated response to threats posed by disease X.

Russia put forward an initiative to create an international electronic platform (exchange) that would improve the quality and increase the number of ties between the BRICS Vaccine R&D Centre members and other interested BRICS organizations, and to create joint projects, including the development of vaccines, exploratory R&D, and preclinical and clinical trials of vaccines.

The participants welcomed the idea of creating a single platform to exchange experience and present their own expertise to other participants of the BRICS Vaccine R&D Centre.
