Scientific Expedition Held to Mark BRICS Geographer’s Day
A scientific expedition titled ‘Nature Reserve Management at Specially Protected Natural Areas of Siberia’ was launched on 18 August as part of the celebration of the inaugural BRICS Geographer’s Day. Scientists, geographers, and coordinators of scientific programmes from BRICS countries took part in the expedition. They visited the Shushenskoye Museum and Reserve in the Krasnoyarsk Region, including the House of the Snow Leopard Museum and the Berendey Arboretum, and also conducted a study of the Oglakhty section of the Khakassky Reserve.
Over their week of work, the expedition participants studied best management practices at biosphere reserves and specially protected natural areas. The results of their joint work will be used to plan further ecological and recreational development both in Siberia and in BRICS countries.
“BRICS is a unique group that encompasses all geographic areas that are of particular scientific interest. And our capabilities are expanding with the addition of new members. BRICS Geographer’s Day can easily be described as a tribute to one of the oldest sciences about the Earth – geography. We see huge potential in this for the practical implementation of the joint ideas of our countries,” Russian Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education Konstantin Mogilevsky said at the ceremony to mark BRICS Geographer’s Day.
The establishment of BRICS Geographer’s Day is a special event as part of Russia’s BRICS Chairship. This holiday will be celebrated on 18 August on an annual basis and will help find ways to practically apply scientific ideas.
A recap of BRICS Geographer’s Day and the expedition will be presented at the Meeting of BRICS Ministers of Science, Innovation, and Technology on 27 September in Moscow.
