Moscow to Host BRICS Sherpa/Sous-Sherpa Meeting

“The first meeting of the BRICS Sherpas/Sous-Sherpas during the Year of the Russian Chairmanship will take place in Moscow on 30 January–1 February. It will include a speech by Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov at the session ‘BRICS Strategic Partnership as a Pillar of Multilateralism’,” Ministry of Foreign Affairs official spokesperson Maria Zakharova said during a briefing on 26 January 2024.

Zakharova noted that the main priorities of Russia’s chairmanship will be presented at the meeting. Russia expects a thorough, substantive exchange of views with partners on the entire range of tasks facing BRICS this year.

The motto of this year of Russia’s BRICS chairmanship will be: ‘Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security’. Roughly 200 events of various levels are scheduled to be held in over a dozen Russian cities.

During its chairmanship, Russia will organize its work within BRICS based on consensus and continuity. The strategic partnership will continue collaboration in such key areas as politics and security, economics and finance, culture, and humanitarian ties. Russia’s plans include paying attention to improving foreign policy coordination, primarily on leading international platforms, as well as interaction on such issues as combating terrorism, money laundering, corruption, and threats in the information space.

Zakharova said Russia attaches particular importance to the organic connection of new members to all formats of BRICS cooperation. Pursuant to the decisions of the 15th BRICS Summit, modalities need to be developed for the new category of the association’s ‘partner states’.

The Roscongress Foundation is in charge of managing the events of Russia’s BRICS chairmanship.
