Kemerovo Hosted Third Meeting of BRICS Working Group on New and Renewable Energy Sources and Energy Efficiency

The third meeting of the BRICS Working Group on New and Renewable Energy Sources and Energy Efficiency took place in Kemerovo on 2–3 July 2024. The event was held in parallel with a meeting of the BRICS Committee of Senior Energy Officials.

The meeting was attended by experts on traditional energy, hydrogen and CCUS technologies, as well as renewable energy from BRICS countries. The international dialogue primarily focused on prospects for cooperation between BRICS countries in the energy sector in light of the energy transition.

BRICS countries account for almost half of the world’s energy production and consumption, and the organization’s expansion only underscores its key role in this regard.

During the Working Group meeting, the participants exchanged views on promising thematic areas for joint research. In particular, they made proposals for cooperation on such issues as smart power supply networks, digitalization and artificial intelligence, synthetic fuels and green energy, solar panels, wind energy, and biofuels. The meeting participants also proposed creating a special BRICS journal to realize the potential of joint BRICS publications.

The mobility of scientists was also an important discussion topic. BRICS representatives discussed education and training in matters concerning renewable energy sources. Specific proposals were made for internships for young scientists and graduate students from BRICS universities.

Potential thematic areas for competitions among research projects as part of the BRICS STI Framework Programme were also agreed upon during the meeting.
