BRICS Working Group on Nuclear Medicine Holds First Meeting at Future Technologies Forum

The BRICS Working Group on Nuclear Medicine held its first meeting on 13 February 2024 on the sidelines of the 2nd Future Technologies Forum in Moscow. The Roscongress Foundation manages the events of Russia’s BRICS Chairship and the Future Technologies Forum.

The BRICS Working Group on Nuclear Medicine was created according to the decision made at the 15th BRICS Summit in 2023. The working group includes the leading BRICS experts on nuclear medicine and radiopharmaceuticals who represent major research and specialized medical centres, as well as manufacturers of medical radioisotopes and radiopharmaceuticals. The meeting was moderated by the Rosatom State Corporation First Deputy Director General and Director of the Rosatom Development and International Unit Kirill Komarov and Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the Granov Russian Scientific Centre of Radiology and Surgical Technologies of the Russian Ministry of Health and President of the Russian Society of Nuclear Medicine Andrey Stanzhevsky.

“Many countries around the world are showing great interest in the capabilities of nuclear medicine. Russia, like other countries that are part of the BRICS economic space, has significant potential in this field. We are confident that cooperation among the countries will enable us to consolidate efforts to more effectively incorporate the achievements of nuclear medicine into medical practice,” Komarov said.

“Today, nuclear medicine is one of the most important priorities in the development of a high-tech personalized approach to the diagnosis and treatment of various oncological and non-oncological diseases. Russia is currently one of the largest suppliers of radioisotope products for medical purposes. In addition, BRICS countries have significant potential in the development and application of methods of nuclear medicine and seek to cooperate in solving a socially important task for all countries – improving people’s quality of life and reducing the mortality rate of patients,” Stanzhevsky said.

The first meeting of the working group addressed such issues as the development of nuclear medicine in BRICS countries and the mechanism needed for more effective interaction to achieve the common goal of improving people’s quality of life and increasing life expectancy. The meeting participants formulated and agreed on the working group’s Terms of Reference.

On 20-21 June 2024 in St. Petersburg the International BRICS Expert Forum on Nuclear Medicine will bring together representatives of the BRICS expert community and government authorities on healthcare.

Moscow hosted the International BRICS Expert Forum on Nuclear Medicine in July 2023. The Forum was attended by more than 200 representatives from Russia, Brazil, India, China, and South Africa. A set of proposals and recommendations was developed to continue effective cooperation and interaction within BRICS.
