BRICS Counter-Terrorism Working Group Holds 9th Plenary Session

The BRICS Counter-Terrorism Working Group (CTWG) held its ninth plenary session on 22–24 July 2024 as part of Russia’s BRICS Chairship. The meeting was preceded by sessions of subgroups of expert practitioners who are working to intensify practical interaction between BRICS countries on key aspects of the counter-terrorism agenda.
Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Vershinin addressed the meeting participants on Russia’s desire to promote a unifying agenda based on the coinciding approaches of BRICS countries to combatting terrorism.
The intensive discussions were held in an engaged and constructive manner. The delegations exchanged substantive assessments of current terrorist threats on a global and regional scale and discussed cooperation in combatting money laundering and financing terrorism, the spread of radical ideology, the use of the Internet for illegal purposes, and suppressing the activities of foreign terrorist fighters.
The key outcome of the meeting was the adoption of the CTWG position document, which reflects the group’s role and place in the international anti-terrorist architecture for the coming years. In addition, it contains a number of recommendations for the further development of specialized cooperation, including on the UN platform.
