BRICS Healthcare Regulatory Authorities Meet at SPIEF 2024

BRICS healthcare regulatory authorities met in St. Petersburg on 5 June on the sidelines of SPIEF 2024. A roundtable was held for BRICS regulators to discuss the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Field of Regulation of Medical Products for Human Use signed in December 2023 and the prospect of having new BRICS members sign on to the Memorandum.

Recognizing that BRICS countries share public health challenges, such as ensuring access to good-quality, efficacious, safe medical products, meeting participants identified opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation:

  • in the exchange of experience of good regulatory practices, frameworks, and channels of open cooperation and a better understanding of medical product registration requirements in different BRICS countries;
  • in networking between scientific organizations for international multicentre clinical trials;
  • in the fight against substandard and counterfeit medical products.

BRICS countries plan to establish a Joint Working Group of BRICS Regulators to explore the possibility of establishing an Association of BRICS Regulators.

The need for an Association was discussed during the plenary session ‘Drug Security in BRICS Countries’ and met with widespread approval from representatives of the professional community.

An open meeting between representatives of BRICS regulatory authorities and pharmaceutical companies was held with presentations on national regulatory requirements within BRICS and opportunities for the export and import of medical products. Representatives of the pharmaceutical industry spoke about their most significant achievements and developments.

The discussion marked the first time BRICS regulators and industry representatives had an opportunity to jointly identify opportunities for further cooperation to bring pharmaceutical products to market within BRICS and beyond.
