Experts from BRICS Network of Labour Research Institutes to Discuss Platform Work

The first meeting of the BRICS Network of Labour Research Institutes as part of Russia’s BRICS Chairship is set to take place on 9 April at the All-Russian Scientific-Research Institute of Labour of the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of the Russian Federation, which heads the research network in 2024.

The Russian Ministry of Labour and Social Protection has proposed focusing the joint research of the Labour Institute Network in 2024 on the topic ‘Platform Work: Role in the Labour Market and How to Regulate Platform Workers’.

The joint research will seek to gain a better understanding of how platform work functions in BRICS and what role the digital transformation of the economy and society plays in this process before suggesting how to regulate platform work flexibly enough to strike the necessary balance between the interests of the state, business, and workers.

The BRICS Network of Labour Research Institutes was etablished in 2017 for the purpose of seeing that the outcomes of the BRICS Labour and Employment Ministers’ Meetings are put into practice and cooperation is deepened among BRICS member states, especially on common issues facing BRICS in labour and employment, and that solutions are found to the many social challenges that arise during the process of inclusive growth.

Current members of the Network include the Centre for Labour Studies and Statistics of the Ministry of Labour and Welfare of Brazil, the All-Russian Research Institute of Labour of the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of the Russian Federation, the V.V. Giri National Labour Institute (India), the Chinese Academy of Labour and Social Security, and the Research Centre of the Department of Employment and Labour of the Government of the Republic of South Africa.

The expansion of BRICS in 2024 is expected to increase the number of research institutes functioning within the Network.
