The Heads of BRICS Academies of Sciences Met in Moscow on 29–30 May
The key event of the first day of the meeting was a plenary session, which was attended by representatives of BRICS academic and university communities and government officials. They exchanged views on the role of scientific cooperation on the topic ‘Academic Partnership in the Interests of Peace, Mutual Development, and Prosperity’. Representatives of the national academies identified megascience class projects and research on nature-based technologies, climate change, food security, and healthcare as priority areas of cooperation.
During the programme of the second day of the meeting, the participants visited the Kurchatov Institute Research Centre, where they learned about its history and the main focuses of its activities. Kurchatov Institute President Mikhail Kovalchuk proposed signing a “declaration on the creation of a biological safety shield similar to the Pugwash agreement on nuclear safety” on behalf of the heads of BRICS national academies and leading scientific centres.
